NEW DELHI (AFP) – Virat Kohli will replace injured India opener Gautam Gambhir for the one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka, the Indian cricket board said here on Thursday.

Gambhir strained his groin muscle and will return home from Colombo to rest for 10 days, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

India are already without Gambhir’s explosive opening partner Virender Sehwag, who is recuperating from a shoulder injury.

Gambhir’s injury is likely to throw him into doubt for the Champions Trophy, set to begin in South Africa on September 22.

Kohli, 20, played the last of his five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka in August 2008.

India open their campaign against New Zealand on Friday and play the hosts the next day. Each side will play two league matches before the top two make it to the final on September 14.

India’s squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Rudra Pratap Singh, Amit Mishra, Dinesh Karth

  3. Mumbai, Oct 21 (IANS) Australian captain Ricky Ponting Wednesday said the India-Australia One-day series should ideally be best-of-five and not seven. Ponting said that a five-match ODI series would have kept the players motivated. “It’s probably too many, five matches are enough in any series. We know the reasons why seven matches are being played,” said Ponting, making it obvious that the commercial considerations force teams to play more ODIs. “If you play seven matches against any side in a couple of weeks, it is difficult to focus, specially when the series is decided. In this case it is almost back-to-back seven-match series with Champions Trophy in between,” Ponting said Wednesday. The Australian team beat England 6-1 and then played the Champions Trophy, which they won, before coming here. Ponting, before leaving Sydney Tuesday, said that there should be some kind of point system to inject some interest in a dead ODI series. He was talking about the series in England where Australia had taken an unassailable 4-0 lead, making the remaining matches a drag and forcing them to rotate the players.
